The environment is another area of key concern to grains and oilseed producers. Producers are the caretakers of agricultural land. Some have said that farmers were the first environmentalists, as they must preserve and foster the soil's ability to produce in order to continue farming.
However, farmers do have a number of concerns about the development of environmental policies.

Farmers across the country are concerned that they will bear a disproportionate burden of the costs required to implement environmental initiatives designed to meet objectives of Canadian society as a whole.

It must be a fundamental policy that all environmental initiatives must be both economically sustainable as well as environmentally sustainable.

Neither the environmental goals nor the economic goals for the agriculture sector will be realize if both aspects of sustainability are not considered.
